Peter Eltringham, who first visited Belize on duty with the British Royal Air Force, is back in England now, after living in Flores, Guatemala, while he researched the third edition of The Rough Guide to Guatemala and Belize (with Mark Whatmore).
The inimitable traveler asked for space to thank those who assisted him in his research:
"In researching this article, I received helpful assistance from,
in addition to those mentioned in the piece, a number of individuals and
organizations. In San Pedro: Laurie and Virginia Furnell of the Mayan Princess
hotel, beautiful suites and the favorite hotel of a very distinguished foreign
resident (I'm not allowed to say who); Sue & Lori of Changes in Latitudes,
a fine little bed and breakfast; Linda and Fido Badillo of Hotel del Rio,
comfortable cabañas in a peaceful, beachfront location. Caye Caulker:
Terry and Doris Creasey of Treetops Hotel; easily the most comfortable and
cleanest hotel on the caye (and thanks for the delicious tea); Orlando Carrasco
(and Susan Scott) of Morgan's Inn, some of the best beach houses on the
island. Belize City: Jean Shaw of the Mopan Hotel, a fount of knowledge;
Dimas Villas of the Mira Rio Hotel, my good friend; also the staff of the
Bistro Caribe bar and restaurant below; Danny Weir Sr., Danny Jr., and Adelma
of the Belcove Hotel for showing me the possibilities of Gallows Point Reef;
Spooners Photo Lab, North Front Street, more excellent results; Homer Leslie
of Native Guide Systems for his knowledge, interest and influence. San Ignacio,
Cayo: Dave Cryer at Eva's Online Cafe (evas@btl.net) for e-mail expertise; David Simpson of David's Adventure Tours for
a fantastic day off, canoeing down the Macal River; Santiago and Ester Mendoza
of Automated Business Systems in whose office most of this article was written.
Apologies to any I've missed; it's been a wonderful opportunity to see the
advances made recently in reef conservation."
